Visitors from outer space witnessing some Earthly religious ceremonies most likely would conclude the participants were either in a drug-induced stupor or that mankind had not as yet evolved a level of intelligence much above that of chimpanzees. However, the aliens would plainly see that the ceremonial participants strongly believed their behavior to be both purposeful and sane.

“Theistic Evolution” is an old theory now being floated within some mainstream religious groups by leaders hoping it will satisfy some of their parishioners’ troubling questions about Darwin’s theory of evolution. I recently read an interesting news article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch about another planned “scientific” expedition to find the remains of Noah’s Ark that supposedly came to rest on Mount Ararat in Turkey after the Great Flood subsided. Although there have been numerous failed attempts by others in the past, the leader of this latest expedition believes this one has a good chance of succeeding because a Kurdish shepherd living in the area said he remembers climbing on the Ark when he was a boy, and his testimony seems to be credible enough to the leader to organize an expedition. The leader plans to start the expedition—as soon as he has the money! Only $60,000 will be needed to start.

We often hear someone say “Without my faith, life would be a torture chamber.” Meaning, of course, that without their strong belief in a personal and protective God, and believing they were going to Heaven when they die, they would be miserable in the here and now.
