Religious Terrorism and You

Terrorism, and the war on it, are not new. Terrorism has been with us ever since man began to think and respond to his emotions. Whether for religious or political reasons its tactics are committed primarily by individuals and groups to intimidate and control others, but sometimes just for revenge. Revenge for real or perceived injustices is a powerful motivator.

Jimmy Wayne’s song lyrics “…it ain’t gonna be fun when the rabbit gets the gun” could be the rallying cry for many minority religious groups around the world today who strongly believe they have been ordered by a supernatural Great Spirit to murder anyone having different religious beliefs. These individuals cannot be deterred with threats of death or imprisonment.

In my opinion, this mayhem can only be fought by changing public opinion within these groups. This will not be easy. Whenever we encounter a disheveled looking man or woman on the street loudly babbling to Spirits we sometimes immediately judge them to be mentally deranged. The same person, looking just as disheveled, in a restaurant with bowed head and talking to the same Spirit(s) is hardly noticed.

Ultimately, in my opinion, all human groups will have to become convinced that messages of hate and orders to murder come from other humans and not from supernatural spirits. The United States and a few other countries are spending billions of dollars and losing thousands of lives trying to defend us from the brutal savagery of religious terrorism. Alas, in my opinion, as long as most of the world considers it to be not only possible but cool to talk to and receive messages from supernatural spirits religious terrorism cannot be defeated. Read Settled Science to learn how early humans invented religious beliefs, and why.
