There seems to be no limit to what some of us claim to believe. Some are now offering “proof” that humans lived on this planet at the same time as dinosaurs. Do they not have any concept of how long Earth has been here? Or how long other life forms lived and died here before dinosaurs arrived? Sharks had been the most feared predators in the sea for 225 million years BEFORE dinosaurs evolved to dominate land animals.
It is extremely difficult for us to comprehend periods of time measured in millions and billions of years. We think of events that happened during the Roman Empire 2,000 years ago as ancient history. Most scientists now date the age of Earth at 4.5 billion years. If the length of a football field represented the age of Earth and you caught the football after kickoff on your own goal line when Earth was born, the simplest life forms, bacteria, would not appear until you had reached your 22 yard line. Dinosaurs and mammals would not evolve until you had reached your opponent’s 5 yard line; dinosaurs went extinct when you reached their 1.5 yard line, and when humans just started to evolve you would be 6.5 inches from a touchdown! Before humans arrived, all the continents we see today had drifted apart and come back together several times, many life forms had evolved and lived for millions of years only to end up becoming a food supply for other life forms or dealing with mass extinctions, and Earth’s climate had changed from tropical to extremely cold innumerable times.
Scientists tell us that dinosaurs evolved shortly after the Permian Extinction, which was the largest mass extinction of life that ever occurred. They lived from around 225 million years ago to 65 million years ago. There were many types and sizes and not all lived at the same time. The most famous one, Tyrannosaurus, evolved 80 million years after Stegosaurus had gone extinct. Birds living today are descended from one species of flying dinosaur.
