Settled Science, written originally to answer Glidewell’s daughter’s questions about evolution, explains in layman’s terms the accepted popular scientific theories behind evolution. Most people have a rudimentary knowledge of evolution and the theories that surround it; this work takes this knowledge to the next level by discussing where these theories came from and why they are so popular today. While many books about scientific issues are weighted down with endless scientific terms that frustrate non-scientists, Settled Science translates complicated scientific jargon into easily understood colloquial language. In text that reads much like a conversation, Glidewell explains the terms that are prevalent in the news and scientific documents, but often misunderstood. Most people have heard of DNA and the Big Bang Theory, but many would have a difficult time explaining them or knowing exactly how they are related. Glidewell breaks down the major theories into sections such as “Plants,” “Animals,” and “Archea and Viruses,” tackles different parts of evolution, and examines them under a modern light. Although the book’s primary focus is science, Glidewell uses history and modern issues to make the information more relevant, and puts the theories in context; and though it is mainly a discussion of the past, Glidewell makes predictions about the future of evolution and the effects that humans and other life will have on the planet. He takes on hotly contested topics from stem cell research to what killed the dinosaurs in a way that the average reader will be able to follow and understand. After reading this book, readers will have the knowledge to form their own opinions about these theories and the issues surrounding them. Every reader will learn that scientific theory drives much of the world today and that it is important to understand these theories in order to fully understand the world. By knowing the facts, people can avoid falling victim to faulty scientific claims and see the truth more clearly. This is the perfect book for the person who wishes to understand the science behind evolution and the issues of today, but doesn’t want to have to read with a scientific dictionary by his side. |
