Like spirituality, and all our other human tendencies that evolved before it, lying was naturally selected for us because better liars survived longer to have more offspring. Soon after early humans acquired consciousness and the ability to think they became aware of the many dangers they faced. Animal predators and competition from other humans for food, space, and mating partners were the greatest threats. Strength and agility were important, but being able to read the intentions of potential enemies soon became more so. Before verbal language evolved, body language and verbal sounds were the only way individuals communicated their intentions to others. In time, some individuals became more adept at faking their body language than others. The development of verbal language provided early humans with an important new tool, the ability to lie to deceive others! Of course, more of the better liars survived so we all now have some ability to lie, and do so for a myriad of reasons.

In order for any new product, idea or “ism” to be successfully marketed it must first be considered useful, or perceived to be, by the people it is being offered to. The product, if purchased, must then perform as advertised and the idea or “ism” must be compatible with other customs and beliefs of the community and provide some psychological comfort to a majority of its members. These products, customs or religious beliefs, once adopted by the group, will remain in the group as is until some substantial change in the community requires they be modified or discarded. Environmental or economic upheavals cause great damage and increased anxiety in all population groups often requiring new ways of thinking and doing things. Economic recessions cause major disruptions in some communities but also provide incentives for new innovations of old products and create new business opportunities in others.

Opinions are a person’s assessment of things, situations, ideas, and other people. Each person either forms his own based on what he already knows, or thinks he knows, or just blindly accepts the opinions of others. The nice thing about opinions is that everyone should be entitled to his or her own no matter how they attain them. Opinions can be rigid and static or dynamic, usually depending on one’s curiosity. Curiosity is the human emotion that motivates us to explore and learn and try new ways of doing things, which makes life interesting. Like all inherited tendencies, curiosity is present in the population on a continuum between individuals with little of it and others, like scientists, that are driven by it.

There seems to be no limit to what some of us claim to believe. Some are now offering “proof” that humans lived on this planet at the same time as dinosaurs. Do they not have any concept of how long Earth has been here? Or how long other life forms lived and died here before dinosaurs arrived? Sharks had been the most feared predators in the sea for 225 million years BEFORE dinosaurs evolved to dominate land animals.

Been Talking Down to another group lately?

Almost everything about us as individuals was determined for us before we were born. The particular combination of genes we inherited from our ancestors were activated by our master genes and our mother’s hormones shortly before birth. All of our physical traits and emotional behaviors are determined by these genes. Nurturing and training by our families and community teach us which behaviors are socially acceptable and which are not.
